Alan Spearman

Alan Spearman

An Emmy award-winning filmmaker and photojournalist.

During his 16-year photography career, Spearman worked for eight newspapers, covering thousands of assignments including the devastating aftermath of both Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti. At these papers Spearman specialized in long-term photographic essays, exploring life along the lower Mississippi River, fifty years of Memphis music, and the unintended consequences of global connection– an epic journey that took him to China, India, Zambia, South Africa, Israel, Palestine, England and Brazil in four months.

His first feature film, Nobody, was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award in 2007. Spearman then collaborated with MTV and Craig Brewer (Hustle and Flow) to create an anthology of short documentaries called $5 Cover: Amplified which premiered at Sundance New Frontiers in 2009. Spearman won two Emmy Awards for the project. In 2010, Spearman studied with legendary director Werner Herzog and made Leaves in the Wind with U2 guitarist, the Edge about his dream of pushing the limits of organic architecture.

Spearman travels extensively, kayaks the Mississippi River as often as possible and occasionally likes to swim across the great river.
